Morse Elementary School in Overland Park, KS raised 3 of the monarch larvae that were part of the Monarchs in Space program. Sixty second graders watched for sixty minutes as the first adult monarch emerged from its chrysalis (video has been edited down to about 6 minutes). We placed a Video Flex camera on the butterfly and projected the event on a large SMART board while the kids watched. The students even made up a song while they waited to the tune of "Oh Christmas Tree", except the words begin, "Oh butterfly...", which you can hear in the background. The children's faces as they filed out and saw the butterfly up close are unforgettable! Thank you for letting us participate in this international, scientific event!
