11/30/09 By about last Wednesday or Thursday, each of the six caterpillars had formed an individual chrysalis, but one chrysalis in Luna has fallen since then. Our teacher, Linda, used a wire and a hot glue gun to hang up the exoskeleton of the fallen chrysalis. In the process, the chrysalis has become cracked. Also, today in class Linda read us a response to an email that we had sent to the “Monarchs In Space” website. We asked a couple of questions about the artificial diet being fed to the caterpillars, whether or not the artificial diet is being made available for purchase soon, and about the speed of the movement in the caterpillars in space. The response we got via email informed us that the artificial diet includes milkweed and a number of other nutritional ingredients but that “the exact recipe is a trade secret at the moment.” According to our response, the monarch artificial diet is about to made available on the market, and we were informed that the temperature of the habitat on the space shuttle has a lot to do with the speed of the caterpillars’ movement.
